Newspaper and magazine publishers heavily rely on advertisements and subscriptions for their revenue. In this process, they leave out lots of readers.
Advertisements clutter their web-page. Some of the web-sites are just horrible to look at. They just forget aesthetic sense. I personally avoid to go back to these sites. If I land up, I leave right away.
Subscriptions brings another stream of revenue. But readers just can not subscribe to everything. At the most, the limit seems to be 5. As a reader, I can not subscribe more than 5 magazines/newspapers. These subscriptions are generally captured by top notch publications. So subscriptions forces majority of readers to go away. I do not go back to a site that I have visited in the past and it asked me to subscribe. Now, these publications will loose on advertisement also.
So I feel publications should open up and offer choices to their readers - pay by the drink.
Does this make sense for both : publishers and readers?
